Georgetown Alum (and some current students) and former WGTB members City Folk are playing Wednesday night as part of the Get Your Pants On event. They'll be joined by DC bands Exactly, Noon:30, and a slew of DJ's sure to make hump-day bumpin. City Folk has been playing in and around DC for a couple of years and their live act has really blossomed into an event of controlled chaos. They held their own when opening for Family Portrait and Real Estate for the WGTB Spring Concert Series, and they're sure to deliver Wednesday night as well.

Concert Pick of the Week: Pearl and Beard

Finally, an indie-folk band that is just accepting that half of their image comes from the beard and nothing else. Pearl and Beard, the Brooklyn based trio, aren't quite as soft as their pidgeon-holed genre might suggest, though. Their sound is uncharacteristically soulful and powerful; they don't shy away from a shout here and there (see: picture). Head down to H street Friday night and maybe he'll let you rub his beard for good luck! Check them out in this subway!

How long has it been since you've had a good couple of yucks? Don't  you just need to get a good yuck in there sometimes? Don't you just want to yuck all over the place, bumpin yuckies with everyone in town? This Friday get all the giggles out of your system with the help of Brian Parise, Mike Blejer, and Eli Sairs, three stand up comedians of the musical variety sure to have you laughing, singing, and probably some weird hybrid of the two.

With the monotony of summer starting to replace the initial euphoria, you'll probably start to seek ways to stimulate those lazy neurons in your brain, and re-broadcasts of Jersey Shore just ain't cutting it. Check out the National Gallery of Art's program, 'Jazz in the Garden' where you can go see some intellectually tickling jazz for free while enjoying a breezy glass of Sauvignon. The program highlights a different Jazz musician or band every Friday evening, and this week they kick off the season with the stylings of jazz vocalist Leslie Summey. Start your weekend off classy, so you can later justify the debauchery.

This Sunday The Black Cat is hosting the annual DC Record fair for all the vinyl lovers in the district. Come indulge in the rows and rows of alphabetized crates as you search for that one find that brightens up your Sunday.


Also, there's going to be a a full service bar and food, so if you get caught with one too many Whitney Houston vinyls, blame it on the booze. And if that's not enough (I know how greedy you get) there's going to be a stellar lineup of DJ's scri-ribbit-ratching all afternoon so you can boogie as you buy.

It must be summer.

Concert Pick of the Week: Long Walks on the Beach

Ok. So you've followed our advice all semester. We've taken you to all the hot spots. We've nudged you towards DC9, The Black Cat, and most of the other popular spots in DC for music. Now- follow us into a warehouse. This Saturday, May 8th, Newdust.com is sponsoring a DIY concert for DC hipsters. The headliner is the humbly infectious Long Walks on the Beach. Front man Fritz Kramer has been in DC for two years and lived the quintessential bedroom-pop story, but is coming out this Saturday for the metaPhysical single release party. He'll be joined by Delicate Steve and Midnight Kids. The best part is, its all happening at Paper Sun, a warehouse venue in Columbia Heights. So, this is the band that wrote the theme song for Megaman. They wear costumes on stage, never break character in interviews, and never reveal their true identities or actual history. We know that they are from Nashville, and we know that they sound nothing like anything that ever came out of Nashville. The music is dramatic, opera-esque, and pretty weird. If you want to see a show with just as much head scratching as head banging, don't miss this act at the intimate Red and the Black in Northeast on H street.

Concert Pick of the Week: Aloha

This picture pretty accurately describes the type of experience you would have this Wednesday at DC9 if you went to see Aloha, a band staking roots in Ohio, Brooklyn, Boston, and DC. The sound is edgy and gutteral, and DC9 is a great place to see a loud band in an intimate setting. Though they may be somewhat experimental, expect a tight show as two of the band members have been playing together for over ten years. Take the G2 from the front gates down to 14th and V and walk the five blocks. It's like 2/3 the price of Third Eye Blind, and ∞/1 times better.

Look, we all liked 'Paper Planes.' Its catchy, its interesting, and its really easy to mime. But surely you are sick of hearing it at every over-crowded dance party in West Georgetown or while grooving on the stick-icky floors of Rhino. This Saturday, treat yourself to some fresh beats by the DJ trio Nouveau Riche at the new venue on U street. These guys are from the DC area and are killer DJ's, sure to make you forget about how awkward your dance moves are.

Don't be the kid who doesn't know about the next big art-rock band out of Austin. Coming to the Rock and Roll Hotel this Friday is Shearwater, a band just about as interesting and weird as the photo implies. So, if the people from GU Art Aficionados haven't forced you at gunpoint to go to G40, take the free shuttle from the Chinatown Metro down to H Street and catch what should be a really expansive and entertaining gig.

Come catch the stringy tunes and boyish good looks of Sondre Lerche at the Rock and Roll hotel on H Street this Friday. Touring on his latest album, Heartbeat Radio, Sondre is bringing sunny songs and hopefully a Norwegian accent back to DC...and lets not forget that he played Georgetown just a few years back. To get to the Rock and Roll Hotel, take advantage of the free H Street shuttle that leaves from the China Town metro stop every half hour or so.

Via Audio has been building buzz for a couple years now, and were lucky enough to have Spoon's Jim Eno produce their first album. On the cusp of releasing their follow-up album, Animalore, you can be sure to catch a lot of their new tunes on Tuesday. Danceable but not diluted, (Think XX, less sexy but more fun) you can't really go wrong for eight dollars. Check out some of their songs here.
